Child rape defendant found guilty

A 31-year-old Dayton man accused of raping children is to be sentenced Oct. 29 after he was found guilty Wednesday on four counts of rape of a child under 13 years of age, and one count of rape by force.

The female victims are the daughters of Kevin Collins’s girlfriend and one of the victims became pregnant, according to Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr.’s office. The girl’s mother found out and reported it to police.

All five counts of rape are first degree felonies and each carries a mandatory maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. After sentencing in Common Pleas Court, Collins will be transferred to Franklin County, Ohio, where he has been indicted on six counts of rape of a child under 10 years of age.

“Again, we see young teens being victimized by an adult male. We need to protect our children from predators, and know where they are and who is around them,” Heck said in a prepared statement to the media.

Collins became a fugitive when he fled the Dayton area after warrants were issued for his arrest in March. He was captured in May in Columbus by the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team.

He originally was charged with nine counts of sexual battery. A Montgomery County grand jury in August approved the additional local charges.

If convicted on all the felony charges, Collins could be sentenced to a maximum of 201 years in prison.
