A local church is helping shoppers in east Dayton access groceries after a fire destroyed one of the neighborhood's largest grocery stores.

Beginning this week, Grace Baptist Church in Kettering is running a free shuttle from the site of the former Food for Less on East Third Street to Kroger at 1024 South Smithville Road.

The shuttle will run Mondays from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday afternoons from noon to 3 p.m., according to church volunteer Steve Dillhoff.

Dillhoff said the shuttle will run indefinitely as plans to rebuild Food for Less are discussed. Kroger has helped with the endeavor by paying for the shuttle's gas.

While the shuttle will run indefinitely, Dillhoff said additional help for transportation is welcomed since the buss only runs two days a week.

"We're only able to provide transportation two days a week so I think if everybody did their part it might be a better community," Dillhoff said.

Those interested in helping with the project can contact Grace Baptist Church at (937) 293-7500.
