Colbert Health and Wellness center tries different approach

TROTWOOD — She has been working in a hospital environment since she was a candy striper at age 15 at Miami Valley Hospital, so Marquetta D. Colbert, a certified family nurse practitioner, knows what is needed for local health care.

“There are not enough providers,” said Colbert, 38. “People weren’t getting care, and it wasn’t cost effective. I’ve wanted to open one of these for a long time.”

That’s why Colbert recently opened the Colbert Family Health and Wellness center at 2580 Shiloh Springs Road.

This isn’t a place for people to come with an emergency such as a heart attack, but Colbert’s facility will be able to provide most of the services of a family doctor’s office, including treating cuts and bruises and writing prescriptions, for both adults and children.

It’s also a place where educating patients on medical conditions is paramount.

“We’re trying to incorporate education with medical management,” Colbert said. “We don’t focus on illness, but wellness and how to prevent illnesses. It’s a different approach to medicine.”

She wants to help treat and manage chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Her facility will be able to run and interpret diagnostic studies, obtain medical histories and conduct physical examinations.

Colbert wants people who don’t have the resources to use a family doctor to stop using a hospital emergency room for basic health care. She wants to treat patients so they’ll need less medication and treatments.

Colbert, 38, grew up in the area, graduating from Meadowdale High School. She then earned an associate nursing degree at Sinclair and two degrees from Wright State University.

She also is in partnership with Dr. Shirelle Applin, a family practice physician currently connected with Wright Patterson Air Force Base, as a consultant.

The hours of the new facility, which opened in October, are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The phone number is (937) 529-4376.
