Colopy named Driscoll Elementary principal

WASHINGTON TWP., Montgomery County — Cherie Colopy, the literacy support coordinator for Centerville City Schools, has been hired as the new principal at Driscoll Elementary School, starting in the 2011-12 school year.

Colopy will replace Sherley Kurtz, who will become the principal at Cline Elementary School, and Kurtz will fill the position that will be vacated by Susan Duffy, who is retiring this year.

Colopy started her career as a second-grade teacher at Fairborn City Schools in 1996. She came to Centerville City Schools in 2005, and worked as a literacy support teacher at Weller and Normandy elementary schools before being named the district’s literacy support coordinator in 2009.

The Centerville resident said being a school principal is something she has wanted to do for a long time.

“I am excited to work with the teachers and the students, and to continue the great things that are going on in Centerville,” Colopy said. “I am looking forward to getting to know everyone (at Driscoll) and feeling my way into their great team.”

Colopy is married to Watts Middle School math teacher Bill Colopy, and they have children who attend Centerville schools.

“We spend a lot of time at ballet and baseball and soccer,” she said with a laugh.

Colopy said she enjoys working in Centerville City Schools.

“I think that we’ve got a lot of people who are really dedicated to working hard for kids and to helping kids put their best foot forward,” she said. “We also have awesome, supportive parents. (Their involvement) helps get the job done in the classroom and continues after school.”

Colopy will start her new job Aug. 1.
