A new program is in the works to help under-insured Miami County tornado victims remove debris and help with other work.

Miami County commissioners said Wednesday that they would work with Union Twp. trustees on attempting to set up the program, which would help those under-insured or uninsured tornado victims who need help removing debris or a home.

The commissioners spoke with Dan Suerdieck of the county development department on the possible use of Moving Ohio Forward grant program funds and/or Community Development Block Grant dollars. The Moving Ohio Forward program provided money, with a 50 percent property owner loan, to demolish structures.

The Community Development Block Grant money would be income from repaid grants

Commission President Greg Simmons said he would meet with a township trustee to discuss the possible use of the grant money and set up criteria for assisting.

"I am glad you decided to do this. It is badly needed for people without insurance," said Commissioner Jack Evans.

Ken Artz, county Emergency Management Agency director, told commissioners last week FEMA disaster recover teams visited more than 300 homes in the county with 150 receiving some type of storm damage. Of those, 15 were listed as destroyed. Damage was mostly in the West Milton, Laura, Potsdam and Ludlow Falls areas.
