Coronavirus: 57,956 total cases, 2,927 deaths reported in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Heath is reporting 57,956 total cases of coronavirus and 2,927 deaths attributed to the virus in Ohio.

There have been 54,232 confirmed cases and 2,677 confirmed deaths.

The state saw an increase in 805 cases over the last 24 hours, just over the 21-day average of 780. Both daily hospitalizations and daily ICU admissions numbers saw an increase, with 77 hospitalizations reported compared to the average 62 and 19 ICU admissions reported compared to the average 15.

There were 16 news deaths reported. The 21-day average is 17.

As of July 4, about 6% of those being tested for the virus were receiving positive results.

Last week, Gov. Mike DeWine unveiled a new alert system aimed at alerting residents, businesses and local governments the risk of coronavirus spread and exposure in each county. The system has four levels of varying severity based off seven data indicators. The more indicators a county meets, the higher the risk of exposure to the virus.

No counties were in the most severe level, Level 4, as of June 30. However, counties, including Montgomery and Butler counties, were in the second most severe level, Level 3.

Also last week, more cities in Ohio announced mask requirements. Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland and Yellow Springs are among cities with face mask requirements. Springfield city commissioners approved a resolution that encouraged and supports wearing face masks, but does not require them.

Hamilton City Council is expected to discuss face masks at its July 22 meeting.
