2 drivers killed, infant injured after head-on crash in Champaign County

UPDATE @ 9:30 a.m.: 

Both drivers involved in a head-on crash on Ohio 29 in Champaign County have died, according to the sheriff’s office.

Clayton L. DeArmond Jr., 24, of Springfield and Courtney L. Cummings, 21, of Urbana, were pronounced dead at the scene following the crash on Ohio 29 East at South Ludlow Road, deputies said in a media release.

A 1-year-old in Cumming’s vehicle was transported to Urbana Mercy Hospital and was later flown to Dayton Children’s Hospital.

The condition of the child was not released.

The crash was reported around 12:20 a.m. after an SUV, driven by DeArmond, traveling west on Ohio 29 went left of center and crashed head-on into a sedan driven by Cummings, deputies said.

Cummings was wearing her seat belt and the infant was secured in a vehicle safety device, according to investigators.

DeArmond was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, deputies said.

Potential factors in the crash and additional details were not released.

The Champaign County Coroner’s Office has been called to the scene of a crash that occurred on Ohio 29 early Tuesday, officials confirm.
