Driver identified that was struck, killed while checking on motorist

UPDATE @ 11:38 a.m.

Authorities said a driver involved in a three-vehicle crash was killed when he got out of his car to check on another driver.

Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Jacob E. Hite, 23, of Wauseaon, Ohio, and a Honda CRV, driven by Stephanie Castle, 46, of Urbana, were southbound on U.S. 68 when Hite rear-ended Castle, according to a preliminary investigation.

Hite was struck and killed by a Honda Odyssey when he went to check on Castle.

The Odyssey driver, Jason Lewis, 47, of West Liberty, was treated and released at a local hospital, according to the Champaign County Sheriff's Office.

Roads were covered with snow at the time of the crash.

The man died at the scene. The driver of the Odyssey was treated and released at a local hospital.

Three cars are involved in a fatal crash in Champaign County.

The roads in the area are snow-covered, but officials have not said if weather was a factor in the crash.

FIRST REPORT

At least one person has died in a crash on U.S. 68 north of Urbana Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were requested to the intersection of U.S. 68 at Ohio 296  north of Urbana around 7 a.m. on a reported multiple-vehicle crash.

Dispatchers confirmed officials at the scene requested a coroner’s office investigator to respond.

Additional details were not available.
