County transit to launch program for low income riders

Greene CATS started a new program this week that will allow some low income county residents to ride the county transit system for free.

The program was started to make transportation to jobs accessible to those who are economically disadvantage, according to the county transportation agency.

The free tokens have to be used for job related activities.

Greene CATS partner agencies, non-government social services agencies that have a 501(c)(3) non-profit status with the IRS, can purchase and distribute the tokens to their clients. These agencies will be reimbursed half of their monthly costs for the tokens based on the amount of eligible job-related trips.
