The residents were not at home. Neighbors reported the fire, Wright said, noting, “quick action on their part or it would have been a total loss.”
Vectren will have to decide whether to shut off the gas to the home because the line is close to the detached garage.
The investigator has traced the fire’s origin to the back wall of the garage.
Wright estimated the damage “in the neighborhood of” $25,000 to the structure, truck and contents stored above the main space of the garage.
The fire is not deemed to be suspicious, he said.

Dayton crews were dispatched about 7:45 p.m. on the report of a possible structure fire.
Crews used a power saw to cut into the roof of the garage, where there was believed to be a storage area between the roof and the main garage space.
There are no reports of injuries. We’re hearing that fire officials have asked for an investigator.
Traffic to South Findlay Street is cut off at South Torrence Street until further notice.
We will update this developing report as we learn more.
