Fire crews arrived at the house in the 2600 block and found flames breaking through the roof and heavy smoke inside on the first floor just after 5 p.m.
The owner-landlord, who lives next door, saw smoke coming from the rear of the house and dialed 9-1-1.
There are reports that crews chose to go into a defensive mode because of the damage, which includes falling ceilings and holes in the floors.
There were no injuries, although the owner-landlord was given oxygen for exhaustion, the chief said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The chief could not give a dollar estimate of the damage.
Mutual aid was sent from Montgomery County, Farmersville, Jefferson Twp. and Englewood fire departments.
