UPDATE @ 10:45 p.m.: An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a Beavercreek Twp. house fire in the 2300 block of Quail Run Road that caused at least $100,000 damage, Deputy Fire Chief Scott Dorsten said.

The township or county building department will have to determine whether the house, estimated to be 3,000 to 3,500 square feet, is a total loss.

"It's very close to that," Dorsten said.

First-arriving crews found a large volume of fire at the rear of the two-story single family home, with flames burning through the roof.

The residents -- a family with children -- managed to escape without injury, Dorsten said.

Dorsten said family members told firefighters they had a fire going in the outdoor fireplace on the rear patio earlier Wednesday evening. Family members said they stepped inside briefly, heard loud popping and saw a large fire, Dorsten said.

Township crews, who had help from Fairborn and Riverside, had to use a large volume of water because of the location of the house Dorsten said was literally the last house in the township. It was an estimated 600 feet from the nearest hydrant, he said, and the water main belongs to the city of Fairborn.

Dorsten said crews had to go through Fairborn to get to the house, which was at the end of Quail Run Road.

Dorsten said his damage estimate of $100,000 for the structure and contents was "preliminary and it's probably going to go higher."
