Damage assessments are continuing today in Riverside, where two tornadoes — one an EF-3, the other an EF-4 — ripped through overnight Monday.

Residential properties in Overlook Mutual Homes, along Burkhardt Road and off-site Wright-Patterson Air Force Base housing were the areas believed to hardest hit by the tornadoes, Riverside City Manager Mark Carpenter said.

“We’re out doing some damage assessment trying to get an update of the neighborhoods that were hit,” he said. “Part of this is just data collection and trying to reassess from the initial impact.”

Base housing - the Prairies - sustained damage to about 150 units, including 14 deemed “uninhabitable,” according to Wright Patt.

And Overlook “was hit pretty hard,” Carpenter said. Both housing communities are operated independent of the city’s jurisdiction. But the city manager said Riverside officials have reached out to Overlook and are seeking to have donations distributed through a nearby church.

Meanwhile, city staff is out in other neighborhoods seeking to determine the extent of the loss. The Colonial Village apartment complex off Burkhardt sustained heavy damage, officials said.

Some off-duty firefighters were brought in to help because “staffing is at minimum today,” Carpenter said.

Police personnel are surveying the areas from Woodman east to the Dayton city limits from Airway Road to Burkhardt.

Firefighters and code enforcement are checking the areas along Burkhardt to Bayside Drive, including the Spinning Road area, Carpenter said.

Service department personnel are surveying the areas between Old Troy Pike and Brandt Pike, or Ohio 202, he added.
