Dayton man sentenced in deadly Free Pike crash

A Dayton man was sentenced to 17 years in prison for a crash that killed a 57-year-old man.

Charley Roy Strickland III, 38, was convicted of aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and operating a vehicle while intoxicated on Jan. 9 after entering a plea deal, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

His driver’s license was also suspended for the rest of his life.

On Feb. 2, Juan Roddy was attaching a chain to disabled vehicle on Free Pike so he could tow it.

Strickland reportedly hit the back of the disable vehicle, which then hit Roddy, causing him to go over the hood.

Roddy was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second victim, who was in the disabled vehicle, was treated at an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Strickland had a blood alcohol content of .219 — nearly three times over the legal limit — and tested positive for marijuana, according to the prosecutor’s office.
