A 58-year-old Dayton man who shot at police during an 11-hour standoff in February 2019 will spend the next 28 years in prison.

Todd Anthony King was inside a home with young children Feb. 5, 2019, in the 1900 block of Elsmere Avenue in Dayton when police responded to a domestic violence complaint, where King’s girlfriend met them outside and said he had assaulted her, police and the prosecutor’s office said.

King refused to come outside and exchanged gunfire with police. King also tried to use the children — described as a 2-year-old and an 8-month-old — as shields during the incident that drew SWAT officers from Dayton and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

A jury found King guilty Feb. 28, 2020, of five counts of felonious assault on a police officer; two counts of endangering children; and one count each of tampering with evidence, inducing panic, domestic violence and having weapons while under disability for a prior offense of violence, the prosecutor’s office stated in a release.
