A loud boom heard in the Dayton area Wednesday night was caused by a vehicle explosion, Dayton police said.

Crews were called to the area of Parker and Home avenues around 10 p.m. Wednesday on a reported explosion.

Police and firefighters found a vehicle on fire as a result of an explosion, said Lt. Jason Hall.

“The vehicle suffered what could almost be termed as catastrophic damage,” he said.

A commercial building and vacant home near the vehicle had windows blown out as well.

“The explosion did originate from inside the vehicle,” Hall added.

The bomb squad was called out as a result of the explosion.

Evidence was collected at the scene and will be sent to the state’s fire marshal lab to determine what substances were involved.

Hall said it was a “significant explosion” and that he was not surprised that people across the Dayton area reported hearing a loud boom.

“Coupling with that, at night time the ambient noise is down,” he said. “So people tend to notice those sharp loud sounds a little more acutely.”
