Mayor Nan Whaley went to Twitter on Monday evening to back the call from the state GOP chairwoman to ask a legislator from Middletown to resign over a controversial Facebook post about the Dayton shooting in the city’s Oregon District that left nine people dead and 37 wounded or injured.

Dayton police fatally wounded the gunman in less than a minute after he began firing a long gun at people on East Fifth Street early Sunday.

"I don't often agree with @ohiogop chair @JaneMurph, but state Rep. Candice Keller needs to resign," Whaley tweeted. "No matter where you're from, who you love or what you look like, you're welcome in Dayton."

"I'm so proud of how our community is responding to the crisis -- the people of Dayton are coming together to support one another like never before. There's no room for this hate."

After the shooting, Keller, who represents Middletown,  posted to her personal Facebook page comments that blame for the Dayton shootings should be placed on the breakdown of the traditional family, gay marriage, violent video games, professional athletes who protest the American flag, recreational marijuana and “snowflakes, who can’t accept a duly-elected President.”
