The driver of a pick-up truck, identified as Matthew Vonbargen, 33, of Hamilton, was driving southbound on I-75 around 3:15 a.m. when he approached a construction barrier and crashed into a ditch near an unfinished bridge in the construction zone.
Vonbargen crashed and dropped about 10 feet, according to police. He called 911, and eight minutes later, another car, driven by Rice, ramped over the same ditch and rolled over on top of the wrecked pickup truck and crashed, according to reports.
Rice was pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital. The right back passenger in the car, identified as Dorothy Dixon, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital where she is listed in critical condition, according to police. Two other passengers in the car were taken to Kettering Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. All four people are related.
