NEW DETAILS: Father, son killed in wrong-way crash on I-71; second child survives

A Massachusetts man and one of his young sons died Tuesday night in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 71 in Warren County.

Jordan Rivard, 41, of Greenfield, Mass., and a son, 5, died in the crash reported at 8:11 p.m. near the Ohio 123 interchange.

Another son, 3, was undergoing treatment at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, according the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Rivard and his sons were traveling to their mother’s home in Berea, Ky., area, O’Bryon added.

Moments before the crash occurred, around 8 p.m., reports came in that an SUV was traveling northbound on I-71 SB, according to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Preliminary investigations showed that a 2016 Ford Explorer was traveling northbound when it struck a 2017 Freightliner, driven by Mohamed Omar, 31, of Seattle, Wash.

Rivard and a juvenile passenger were pronounced dead on the scene. A second juvenile passenger was transported to the hospital in Cincinnati.

Omar was transported to the Bethesda Arrow Springs Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

A release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol identified a Massachusetts man who was killed in a head-on crash on I-71 SB near state mile marker 31.

Moments before the crash occurred, around 8 p.m., reports came in that an SUV was traveling northbound on I-71 SB, according to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Preliminary investigations showed that a 2016 Ford Explorer, driven by Jordan Rivard, 41, of Greenfield, MA, was traveling northbound when he struck a 2017 Freightliner, driven by Mohamed Omar, 31, of Seattle, WA.

Rivard and a juvenile passenger were pronounced dead on the scene. A second juvenile passenger was transported to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Omar was transported to the Bethesda Arrow Springs Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Turtlecreek Township Fire/EMS and the Lebanon Police Department all assisted with the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lebanon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

INITIAL REPORT:

Two people have been killed and as many as two others have been injured in a wrong way, head-on collision on I-71 South near state Route 123 in Lebanon.

A third victim was flown to Cincinnati Children's Hospital and a fourth victim was taken to a hospital by ground unit from the accident involving an SUV and a semitrailer.

The driver reportedly was killed at the scene and two passengers were left trapped in the wreckage.

The accident occurred about 8:11 p.m. and I-71 South will remain shut down until further notice, an OSP Lebanon Post dispatcher said. The northbound lanes are open.
