Martinsen has been police chief since 2008. He also being provided evaluation and counseling paid for by the university, according to the letter. He has turned in his university-provided weapon, keys and badge and he is to stay away from campus. His leave was effective Thursday.
Martinsen, police chief and director of campus safety at Ohio University from 2006-2008, said it would not be appropriate for him to comment. The university has declined to comment on the investigation.
Martinsen disciplined himself in March to four hours of firearms safety training after he left his service weapon in a restroom.
Assistant Chief David Finnie is heading up the department while the investigation of Martinsen continues.
