Driver falls asleep behind the wheel, crashes into fire hydrant in Dayton

A driver who fell asleep behind the wheel crashed into a fire hydrant, causing water to pour down a Dayton street Monday morning.

The crash was reported at the intersection of Cornell Drive and Shaftesbury Road around 7:30 a.m.

Investigators said the driver suffered only minor injuries in the crash but was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

The crash caused significant damage to a fire hydrant at the intersection and sent a large amount of water out of the ground and down the street.

Crews arrived on the scene around 8:30 a.m. and were able to shut off the water. It was unknown when repairs would be made to the hydrant.
