FedEx closing area facility, eliminating 222 jobs

WEST CHESTER TWP. — More than 200 jobs will go away in January when an area FedEx facility closes.

FedEx sent a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice to Ohio Department of Job and Family Services on Monday, Nov. 29, indicating that it will close its National LTL facility, 6431 Centre Park Drive, on Jan. 29.

It has already notified 222 employees of their eliminated positions. The closing, according to the notice, is permanent.

Closing the facility is part of a national realignment of FedEx Freight to integrate FedEx National LTL (less than truckload), said Ann Saccomano, a spokeswoman for FedEx.

FedEx announced plans in September to integrate its short-haul and long-haul trucking networks effective Jan. 30.

For the past four years, the short-haul and long-haul networks have operated separately following the acquisition om 2006 of another trucking company, Watkins Motor Lines, which became the National LTL service, Saccomano said. Short-haul trucking is defined by a distance of 1,600 miles or less; long-haul is more than 1,600 miles, she said.

About 100 FedEx national long-haul facilities will close nationwide, shedding a total of about 1,700 jobs, according to the delivery company’s first quarter earning statements.

“The purpose is to make it much more efficient and convenient for the customer,” Saccomano said.

Some employees will be offered other jobs with FedEx Freight; others can apply for positions in other FedEx companies. Discussions with employees began in September.

“A number of them we expect will be moving into other positions with FedEx,” Saccomano said.
