MIDDLETOWN — It must be time for the Fenwick Festival when the Fun Slide is ready to go, looking like a pink tongue cascading to the ground.

Now organizers hope that “tongue” won’t catch any raindrops like it did the past few days, making the setup a mite challenging.

“It poured down rain last night three different times,” said longtime festival organizer Ed Dobrozsi, not long after some light showers had sprinkled down on the festival Thursday. Pointing to one of the booths, he said, “You have to tie those flaps down or it’s like a sail.”

If the forecast holds out, the booths won’t sail away this year. The National Weather Service calls for only a 20 percent chance of rain today, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s Saturday and Sunday.“We feature a lot of the same stuff people love — the old favorites everyone comes back for,” said Robin Blank, a director of development at Fenwick who is heading the festival for this first time this year.

The prizes are new, however. This year’s gold raffle could net the winner their choice of a 2008 Jeep Wrangler or a 2007 Volkswagen Beetle. The red raffle winner gets either a $7,500 shopping spree at Watson’s of Dayton, or $5,000 cash. Watson’s sells pools and spas.

In addition, the band Farewell Fisher, comprised of Fenwick alumni, is scheduled to play at 9 p.m. Friday, Blank said. She estimated that up to 10,000 people have attended the festival over the course of a weekend.
