Firefighters are testing fire hydrants after two were found not working at the scene of a fire Monday evening in a neighborhood damaged by the Memorial Day tornadoes.

Two mobile homes caught fire just before 8:30 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of Woodland Hills Boulevard. Lines had to be extended hundreds of feed after the two hydrants were found not working, said Harrison Twp. Battalion Chief Mike Crist.

One mobile home was destroyed, and another was damaged.

Neighbors said they are worried after finding out hydrants weren’t working.

“If my house were to catch fire ... what if that one does’t work,” said Brenda Gordon. “My house could burn down before they got water to it.”

Harrison Twp. firefighters said the two broken hydrants will be replaced, and by next week, the rest of the hydrants in the neighborhood will have been tested.

Neighbors said vacant mobile homes are a nuisance.

Firefighters said the cause of the fire is suspicious, and the homes have been without running water or electric for some time.
