Investigators are on scene, working to determine the cause of the fire.
Wright said no evacuation was needed because crews were able to usher the smoke down a hall and out a window. Plus, he said, residents kept the doors to their apartments closed and that helped prevent the smoke from spreading throughout the building.
He could not put a dollar amount on damage because he hasn't been to the 10th floor to see the damage.
UPDATE @ 8:04 p.m.:
At least two or three dozen residents are now in the lobby of a Wilmington Avenue high-rise apartment building where Dayton crews were sent to put out a fire on the 10th floor.

We're hearing the 11-story building is a residence for the mentally and physically disabled as well as the elderly.
One woman has been brought out on a gurney. Her condition is not known, but she was sitting up as firefighters took her to a medic unit. She said she was experiencing chest pains as she was taking the stairs in the evacuation, a Dayton fire battalion chief said.
The woman has been taken to a hospital.
FIRST REPORT
Crews are working a two-alarm fire at an apartment building in the 900 block of Wilmington Avenue.
Dayton crews were dispatched about 7:15 p.m. on a report of smoke coming from one of the units.
Firefighters said they see smoke on or about the 10th floor and upgraded the response to call for more firefighters and firefighting equipment.
Traffic on Wilmington is being blocked until further notice.
