Foodbank, CareSource to host mass food giveaway today

The Foodbank will host a mass distribution event today to dole out fresh produce and other edibles to families in need.

CareSource is sponsoring the event and providing volunteers to help distribute the food from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Nutter Center, 3640 Colonel Glenn Highway, Fairborn.

The food will be given away at no cost to the recipients.

"There are 22,770 individuals in Greene County alone who do not know where their next meal is coming from and we don’t want to see anyone go hungry in the Miami Valley," Michelle Riley, CEO of The Foodbank, said in a prepared statement.

Cathy Ponitz, CareSource Foundation vice president, said in the release that her organization is "thrilled to once again" be a partner in this event.

“The Dayton area Foodbank provides vital resources to many of our 1.6 million members, and we are proud to be working with this organization to further our mission of improving our members’ health and well-being,” Ponitz statement reads.

The Foodbank comprises more than 100 agencies and distributed nearly 10 million pounds of food in 2016, according to the release.
