Centerville City Schools announced Monday that John Doll, a former board member, was selected unanimously by the board to fill the vacancy left by Brad Evers’ resignation in April.

“John brings a wealth of experience with him due to his past experience with the board,” Clara Osterhage said in a statement. “He is committed to our district and our community, and the four board members unanimously agreed on having him rejoin the board of education.”

The board reviewed 14 applications for the seat before selecting Doll during a special meeting last week. Doll, who was a member of the Centerville Board of Education from 1992-2013, will serve through the end of 2017. The seat is up for election in November.

Doll said Monday that he doesn’t know yet whether he’ll run for election to a full term in November.

“I haven’t really even thought about that,” Doll said. “It depends, once I get there, what it feels like, and then I’ll go from there. … It’s just another opportunity to get involved.”

Doll has been off the school board for more than three years, but pointed out that much has stayed the same at Centerville schools. Tom Henderson has been superintendent since 2009, and he and assistant superintendent Bob Yux have been in the district for decades.

Two other school board members’ terms also expire at the end of this year — David Roer, who is in his 24th year on the Centerville board, and Osterhage, who is in her fourth year. Both have said they intend to run for re-election. The deadline to file signed petitions with the Montgomery County Board of Elections in order to run for that seat is Aug. 9.

“I think the basic core’s always going to stay the same in Centerville – the emphasis on excellent education and treating people right,” Doll said. “That’s what they do.”

In addition to serving as a longtime board member, Doll has volunteered in a number of positions throughout the school district and in the Centerville-Washington Township community. He practiced labor law for more than 35 years and is a partner with Dayton legal firm Doll, Jansen and Ford.

Doll was also a chairman on the Montgomery County Board of Elections. Doll stepped down from his seat with the board of elections to fill the vacant seat in Centerville.

The Centerville Board of Education is comprised of five elected resident citizens and is the governing body of the school district. The other four members include Osterhage, Vice President David Roer, Annie Self and Jeff Shroyer.
