The billionaire businessman passed away at the Spectrum Health System in Grand Rapids after suffering a stroke at his home early Friday morning, according to a company statement.
Meijer is known for starting the "supercenter"-style store that made his company a powerhouse retailer in the Midwest.
After expanding his father's grocery store operation in 1962, Meijer went on to open 180 stores throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois, bringing in annual sales of $15 billion.
Both Meijer and his wife were known philanthropists, donating millions to art projects and other causes in the Grand Rapids area.
Meijer is survived by his wife, Lena, and sons Hank, Doug and Mark.
