DAYTON — Bill Goodman Gun and Knife Shows have tightened rules governing who can buy guns at Hara Arena and other Goodman shows.

Background checks of buyers are required by licensed and non-licensed vendors selling guns at the shows promoted by Goodman, company officials confirmed Monday.

“All vendors who have any firearms on display must display a ‘Background Checks Required’ signage provided by the promoter,” according to new guidelines posted online by Goodman.

The new rules have no effect on gun sales between individuals at the shows.

“There’s really no way to prevent that,” said Scott Braum, a Dayton attorney representing the Goodman organization.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg referred to the change in Goodman’s policy in an announcement on an undercover investigation by NYC agents at a gun show in Phoenix on Jan. 23.

The Phoenix investigation, the second by NYC agents, came 15 days after six people were killed and 13 — including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords — were wounded by a gunman in Tucson.

Goodman show manager Dave Goodman said the background-check policy change was made at least six months ago and was unrelated to discussions with Bloomberg’s office.

“It’s just a business practice we have changed,” he said.

In 2009, city investigators in New York found problems at seven gun shows in three states, including shows promoted by Goodman at Hara, Sharonville Convention Center north of Cincinnati and the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville.

On Monday, Bloomberg’s office said undercover agents bought a Glock pistol with a 33-round extended magazine, like the weapon used in Tucson — with no background check — at the Crossroads of the West Gun Show in Phoenix.

Goodman, who is based in Tennessee, promoted a show at Hara last week and is promoting another one there this month.
