Grape tomatoes sold at Trader Joe’s recalled amid salmonella fears

A tomato recall regarding potential salmonella contamination that began earlier this week in the western U.S. has expanded and now affects Ohio, including the Trader Joe’s store in Kettering.

Taylor Farms Pacific, Inc. in Tracy, Calif., was notified earlier this week by a grower named Six L’s that a specific lot of grape tomatoes supplied to Taylor Farms Pacific may be contaminated with salmonella, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The grape tomatoes were used in products made for several national grocery chains, including Sam’s Club and Walmart.

However, none of the products containing the potentially tainted tomatoes were distributed in any Ohio Sam’s Club or Walmart stores, according to the FDA.

The recall is precautionary and no illnesses have been reported, the FDA said.

Trader Joe’s, a national grocery chain with a store in the Town & Country Shopping Center in Kettering, posted a message to its Midwest and Eastern Seaboard customers notifying them that it was recalling its Trader Joe’s Splendido Little Tomatoes with the code dates “Packed On: 11 AL 16” and “Packed On: 11 AL 17” because those tomatoes shared a packing line with the recalled tomatoes, which Trader Joe’s said originated from a different farm.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, the FDA said.

Healthy people may experience fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
