Hazardous waste collection Jan. 26

Greene County Environmental Services will hold a household hazardous/special waste collection event on Tuesday, Jan. 26. Accepted waste includes: household hazardous waste, scrap metal, large household appliances and tube fluorescent light bulbs.

Purchase dog tags online

Dog owners now have the option to purchase dog tags online.

Dog tags may be purchased through the Greene County auditor’s dog registration website located at www.doglicenses.us/OH/Greene.

The cost for an online purchase includes a basic tag fee of $20, plus an online convenience fee of $2.50 for each dog registered. Purchases made online are payable using American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa. Owners will receive their tags via return mail within 10 business days.

Dog tags are available through Jan. 31 without a penalty. Unless it is a newly acquired dog, all tags purchased after Jan. 31 will be subject to a late fee.

All dogs three months and older that have been owned for more than 30 days are required to be licensed by the state of Ohio, according to the Greene County Auditor’s Office.

Dog tags may still be purchase by mail or by visiting the Greene County Auditor’s Office, 69 Greene St., or Greene County Animal Control, 641 Dayton-Xenia Road.

Take a hike to ID trees

Participants will learn how to identify some of the common native trees found in Ohio using basic tree markers such as shape, bark, twigs and fruit during the winter tree identification hike beginning at 1 p.m.Saturday, Jan. 23, at Russ Nature Reserve, 2380 Kemp Road.

The hike will be guided by a Greene County Parks & Trails naturalist and will include learning the wide variety of native trees found within Greene County.

Russ Nature Reserve is the newest Greene County Parks & Trails site and offers 90 acres of woodlands, restored prairie, play area, bee apiary, tree nursery, hiking trails, pond and more.

The hike is free to all participants, but donations are accepted. Participants are asked to dress for the weather.
