Patient prompted hazmat call to Springfield Regional Medical Center ER

A hazmat unit was called to Springfield Regional Medical Center Thursday evening  for a patient who had come to the ER after having breathed in what was believed to be joint compound, a hospital official said.

The incident was reported just before 5 p.m. on a report that a white powder or substance someone brought in is making people ill.

The patient is stable and no one was evacuated, the official, Nanette Bentley, the hospital system’s public relations director, said.

The hazmat unit was called out of caution, to evaluate the compound, she said.
