Wayne High School has notched seven state championships since 1975 — and Huber Heights Councilman Glenn Otto wants all who pass the city’s border to know it.

Otto proposes promoting the high school’s state championships and runner-up places — Wayne has earned seven, each — through public signage at the city boundaries, as is common in many communities across Ohio.

“There’s a big movement right now to create a little bit more civic pride with the schools,” Otto said, noting he had a meeting recently with Wayne Principal Jeff Berk to see “what we could do in a coordinated effort to put out the fact that we have so many accomplishments from our students, especially in the athletic arena.”

BOWLING: Motivation pays off for Wayne

Otto said he would like to do the project on the “cheap and quick” with signs made in-house. Most council members present at a work session Tuesday expressed openness to the idea. Councilwoman Janell Smith added she would like to ensure Bethel Local Schools are represented, too, in her ward.

The next step, Otto said, will be reaching out to see how much signs would cost to produce in-house. Additionally, the councilman said he would like to see if students can be involved in the process of designing the signs.
