Huber Heights grade school principal resigns

UPDATE @ 10:15 p.m.: Former Huber Heights grade school Principal Larry Sussman will return to the district as a teacher. Where he'll be assigned was not made clear.

Sussman did not attend tonight’s school board meeting, but board member Mike Miller read the resignation letter the embattled school administrator emailed to the board.

In it, Sussman said he was put on leave in December for what he was told were two incidents.

One was a picture of him with a student that was posted to Facebook. Sussman said he had permission from the child’s mother to post the photo. He also said other teachers have posted photos of themselves with the same child and faced no consequences.

Sussman said the other reason for his being put on leave was a Facebook post about GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s comments on a Muslim database.

Other than Miller, no board member offered comment during or after the meeting.

UPDATE @ 7:32 p.m.: The Huber Heights School Board unanimously accepted Valley Forge Elementary Principal Laurence Sussman's resignation this evening without debate.

After the vote, board member Mike Miller read a statement from Sussman stating it has “not been easy” over the past three years because of the loss of a parent “and other personal events.”

Miller, speaking for himself, said, “This decision, for me, is not one I made lightly. I’ve had a lot of information coming in over the past several weeks to help me get to the point where I am.”

About 40 people are in attendance.

EARLIER REPORT

The principal of Valley Forge Elementary School will resign tonight, according to a Huber Heights City School District board meeting agenda.

Principal Larry Sussman was placed on administrative leave in December pending an investigation into "unprofessional behavior online," but district officials didn't elaborate.

Sussman also received a written reprimand in September 2010 for inappropriate use of a personal cell phone that resulted in negative feelings from administrative staff, according to the documents.
