One of Huber Heights’ busiest intersections will be getting a face-lift, but some residents feel the upgrades are unnecessary.

The city plans to upgrade the crosswalks and stop lights at the intersection of Brandt Pike and Chambersburg Road. City Council here approved the project, with the cost not to exceed $475,000.

Huber Heights City Engineer Russ Bergman said the upgrades will make the intersection safer for drivers and pedestrians. The intersection is also old and the electrical system it operates on needs to be updated, Bergman said.

Former Huber Heights mayor Tom McMasters said he feels that the money being spent on new mast arms could be better spent on improving roads.

He said the lights at that intersection have been working perfectly fine and doesn’t see how the project would improve safety.

“My daughter had an accident at that intersection. Someone turned in front of her,” McMasters said. “I just don’t see how mast arms would stop someone from turning in front of her.”

McMasters said he feels the city is “grasping for a solution” on Brandt Pike revitalization efforts.

“I don’t think mast arms will bring one new business to that area,” McMasters said, “but smoother roads might.”

Burgman said the upgrades to the intersection are part of the Brandt Pike revitalization efforts.

The upgrades will also make the intersection more accessible by adding ramps and a lighted signal that counts down for those crossing the street. It is just an added bonus that the upgrades will make the intersection look nicer, Bergman said.

Bansal Construction, based in Fairfield, will be doing the project. Counstruction should be completed in the early spring.

Bergman said construction will not close down the entire road, but some lane closures should be expected during that time.
