2 hurt in trash truck rollover; garbage creates mess

Two people were hurt when a garbage truck rolled over on an overpass Friday afternoon.

According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, the Rumpke truck was headed east on Wyse Road over Interstate 75 at about 2:30 p.m. when it hit a guard rail. It’s not clear what led to the crash.

The passenger, who was covered in fuel as a result of the crash, is in serious condition. The driver’s condition is not known. Both were taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

As of 3:05 p.m., Wyse Road was closed while crews worked to turn the truck upright. Officials said it would be about an hour before the road could be reopened.

Witnesses said the operation appeared messy because of the truck was full of trash.

Bob Viox, Rumpke operations manager, in a statement released not long after the accident, said, company safety officials are working with Butler Twp. police and the OHP to determine the cause of the crash.

The residential trash truck was turning left in the direction of the Montgomery County Transfer Station when it overturned, Viox said.
