The founder of a restaurant at the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek announced this morning, Thursday, March 12, that he will close his restaurant’s dining room for at least two weeks and focus exclusively on delivery and pickup during that time to limit his employees' potential exposure to the COVID-19 coronavirus.

"We think this might be inevitable, so we want to be the first," said David Butcher, owner of Flyby BBQ, an independently owned restaurant that opened a year ago near the Fairfield Commons mall's main entrance. Flyby BBQ started out as, and still operates, a food truck.

One of Butcher’s family members who works at the restaurant is battling lung cancer, and contracting the coronavirus would almost certainly be fatal, Butcher said. While the family was discussing strategies to limit that family member’s potential exposure to the virus, Butcher said, “It dawned on us that if we are taking precautions for our family, why would we not do it for our crew, too?”

Plans call for Flyby BBQ’s dining room to shut down after the close of business today. Its food will still be available for pickup in the restaurant’s vestibule and for delivery by DoorDash. Delivery orders can be placed by either calling the restaurant or by ordering through DoorDash, Butcher said.

All of Flyby’s “Party Packs,” all-inclusive deals that include sandwiches, sides and utensils, will be available for free delivery, the restaurant owner said.

Butcher said he will use the temporary suspension of dine-in service to clean the restaurant thoroughly and to prepare the Flyby BBQ food truck for the upcoming season.
