Strange clouds were spotted over downtown Dayton on Friday morning. They were "gravity waves," which exist in the atmosphere when there is a pattern of rising and falling air, just like a wave on the water.

Strange weather events like that happen. Here are five recent examples.

A January rain event covered cars and items in “Dirty Rain.”

A warm front moved across the Miami Valley that caused winds to shift from the west to south / southeast. This shift in wind direction likely was somewhat responsible for allowing higher concentrations of dust/dirt to advance into our area before showers arrived.

These clouds, spotted earlier this week, look like ocean waves. They are called Kelvin-Helmholtz waves or clouds also known as “billow clouds.” The formation is named after the two scientists who discovered them.

A mysterious blob was showing up on Doppler radar earlier this month near Van Wert, Ohio.

It came from the Blue Creek Wind Farm. Large groups of power-generating windmills can have some influence on the weather pattern around them. They create turbulence in the lowest level of the atmosphere.

While these clouds almost look like jelly fish, Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Eric Elwell said there is a simple explanation to what was happening. What you are seeing is called “virga.”

Mysterious blob appears on radar over Indiana

The National Weather Service confirmed with the military that countermeasures / chaff was released south of Indianapolis in June 2016, which caused the mysterious “blob” to show up.

Weather service officials also said we should expect more “blobs” to show up on radar soon. The chaff release showed up on radar for nearly five hours.

A weird cloud seen over the west side of Cincinnati and parts of Hamilton, Middletown, West Chester and Fairfield in 2015 had experts puzzled. The good news is wasn’t a tornado, and it didn’t pose a threat, the National Weather Service said. But what was it? That’s not clear.
