A new private club to be called “The Corner Club” is in the early stages of development in the Harrison Twp. space that formerly held Boston’s Bistro & Pub.

An entity called “Dog Leg Tavern LLC” applied to the Ohio Division of Liquor Control in early December for the equivalent of a full liquor license to serve until 1 a.m. at 7500 North Main St. (Ohio 48).

But the statutory agent for Dog Leg Tavern LLC told this news outlet this morning, Dec. 13, that the new venture is expected to be  named “The Corner Club,” and its business plan calls for it to be a private club. Another LLC under the Corner Club name was formed less than three weeks ago.

We have reached out to the owners of The Corner Club and will update this story with any new information. Harrison Twp. officials said they have had conversations with the owners about the project, but have received no permit applications or other documents. A private club at that location would require a hearing before Harrison Twp.’s Board of Zoning Appeals prior to issuance of a zoning certificate, township officials said.

Liquor-license applications usually occur in the early stages of a new restaurant, pub or private club’s  development and do not always lead to the opening of a new business, since the owners must navigate a host of regulatory and financial obstacles before serving their first customer.

But the activity is an encouraging sign for the potential re-development of a space that has been vacant since Boston’s Bistro & Pub shut its doors in July 2016 after 35 years in business — the first quarter-century in downtown Dayton.

The pub, which was a pioneer in the Dayton area’s craft-beer movement, lost its lease and was forced to move from East Second and Jefferson streets in downtown Dayton to the Harrison Twp. location in 2005. But the move was a homecoming of sorts for the pub’s founder and owner, David Boston, whose father had operated a Hungarian restaurant in the Harrison Twp. space in the 1950s and ’60s.
