When Avriauna saw her grandmother in trouble, she rushed out of the house and knocked on doors of neighboring houses until she was able to rouse someone to call 911.
"She's my hero. She saved my life," Jarrett told News Center 7's James Rider in July.
Wednesday, in a surprise event, four members of the Kettering Fire Department gave Avriauna a firefighter's hat, "Marshall Paw Patrol," (the stuffed Dalmation puppy from TV's "PAW Patrol"), a die-cast model of a Kettering Fire Department car, a fire prevention activity book and a turn in the driver's seat of their fire truck.
"I told her she did a very good job," Kettering Fire Capt. Kris Holbrook said.
The captain said she would tell any child who would find himself or herself in an emergency situation like Avriauna faced that day to practice for emergencies, know how to dial 9-1-1, know your address and above all else remain calm.
Avriauna checked all those boxes that day in July, the captain said.
"I would say she's a rare case," Capt. Holbrook said of Avriauna. "We don't run across many kids who know what to do when they are put in that scenario."
