Keystone Foods opens Fairfield distribution center, adding jobs

Company supplies food and paper products to fast-food restaurants.

FAIRFIELD — The first case of frozen hamburger patties made its way out of the new Keystone Foods distribution center in Fairfield on Sunday.

Keystone Foods, a fast-food industry supplier, opened its U.S. Distribution Fairfield facility over the weekend, according to a company spokeswoman. The Pennsylvania-based company invested nearly $12 million in the industrial site at 4260 Port Union Road, adding office space, a freezer, cooler, racking for pallets and dock modifications, said Maureen Garrity, Keystone spokeswoman.

Keystone has geared up for operations since signing a 15-year lease in September, according to Garrity.

A hundred truck drivers, warehouse workers, managers and other employees have been hired so far, and up to nearly 240 employees will be added gradually, Garrity said.

The company in January conducted a special hiring event through Workforce One of Butler County and held a job fair at Cincinnati Marriott North in West Chester Twp.

A “significant number” of employees will be transferred from its other Ohio distribution center in Springfield, though a specific number wasn’t given; however, the Springfield facility will stay open, according to the company.

Keystone opened a Fairfield location after landing a contract to supply McDonald’s restaurants in southern Ohio, eastern Indiana and northern Kentucky with food and paper products, she said. According to the company, it expects to deliver 20 million cases from Fairfield a year.

Renovations were completed on track for the end-of-the-month opening, said Garrity.

“It’ll be good to have some more new jobs in the community,” said Greg Kathman, Fairfield economic development manager.

According to Kathman, Keystone leased approximately 200,000 square feet; it’s the largest tenant in a 249,000-square-foot building with some space remaining.
