Charles Mayer was pronounced deceased at Mercy Health — St. Rita’s Medical Center, where he was taken after a Wapakoneta fire/rescue crew extricated him from the wreckage of his Chevrolet Impala.

Mayer had been westbound on Infirmary Road and was at a stop sign for 501 about 12:15 p.m. when he failed to yield the right of way to a Chrysler minivan headed north on 501. The minivan struck the driver's side door of Mayer's vehicle.

The minivan driver, 60-year-old Rusty Elsass of New Knoxville, was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to the state patrol post at Wapakoneta, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.
