A Warren County restaurant has captured 1st place for its beef rub in a National Barbecue News competition.

The 1572 Roadhouse Bar-B-Q restaurant on the grounds of the Ohio Renaissance Festival at 10542 E. State Route 73 in Harveysburg east of Waynesville won for its "All About The Meat" beef rub in the 2016 Rubs of Honor competition.

Chris Cavender, founder of 1572 Roadhouse Bar-B-Q, said he entered all three of his rubs — Honey Dew Chicken Rub, Butt 'N' Rack Pig Rub, and the All About The Meat Seasoning that captured the top honor for beef rub. All three rubs are available online at this Renfest.com link.

“The beef rub is very different,” Cavender said. “It came about over time as I mixed a combination of seasonings I’ve used in restaurants over the years with the addition of several smoked salts, peppers, and spices. It is great on all types of meat, but we use it on our smoked tri-tip at the restaurant.”

The 1572 Roadhouse Bar-B-Q opened its doors to the public for the first time this year. It is a seasonal restaurant, open from May through the end of October. It will reopen in mid-May 2017, Cavender said.

The barbecue restaurant seats about 200 on its 3,200-square-foot covered deck, and its menu includes Baby Back Ribs, Chicken, Pulled Pork, and Smoked Sliced Beef.

Cavender has operated the food-service operations at the Ohio Renaissance Festival for 20 years, and also served as executive chef at Sycamore Creek Country Club and, before that, at Jay’s Restaurant.

The Warren County restaurant isn’t the only Dayton-area barbecue restaurant recognized by National Barbecue News.

Company 7 BBQ in Englewood last year captured the “best barbecue sauce” award in two of the three sauce categories in the National BBQ News’ 2015 Sauces of Honors competition. Company 7’s “Captain Carolina” sauce was declared the best sauce for pork, out of 59 entries, and its “Chief Smoky” won in the category of “Best Sauce for Beef,” out of 50 entries.
