The leaders of Omega Baptist Church in Dayton will retire this year.

The Rev. Daryl Ward, senior pastor, and the Rev. Vanessa Ward, co-pastor, plan to retire after 33 years of pastoral leadership.

The two plan to have a retirement celebration Sept. 22 at the 1821 Emerson Ave. church, and pastor-elect Rev. Joshua Ward will be installed that afternoon.

The well-known Dayton pastors have a long history of community involvement and social justice advocacy beyond the four walls of the church.

One of the major projects during their tenure is the planned Hope Center for Families, which will be a community campus on the former United Theological Seminary on Harvard Boulevard. The goal is to build a center with workforce, education and health services. The Omega Senior Lofts, a senior housing project on the campus, just broke ground.

This also includes partnering with Dayton Public Schools on a neighborhood school center at Fairview Elementary.

Daryl Ward also ran Dayton City Commission last year. He lost in a close race to Darryl Fairchild.
