Longtime staffer is appointed county engineer

TROY — Paul Huelskamp was no stranger to the Miami County Engineer’s Office when appointed county engineer in late March.

A Staunton Twp., Miami County, native, he first joined the county engineer’s staff in 1990 before leaving from 1997 through part of 2000 to work for the city of Troy. He returned to the county engineer’s office as chief design engineer in 2000.

His boss both times with the county was Doug Christian, who retired earlier this year after more than 32 years as the elected county engineer.

Huelskamp, appointed by the Republican Central Committee, will complete Christian’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2012.

A 1984 graduate of Miami East High School, Huelskamp graduated from Edison Community College in 1987 with degrees in civil engineering technology and architectural engineering technology. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Dayton.

Huelskamp described himself as an “engineer at heart,” adding he likes the technical aspects of the job.

His initial weeks as engineer offered challenges in several areas as the county experienced snow, ice and flooding.

“I like dealing with the people. I get a feeling of pride being able to help people in their daily lives,” he said.

Huelskamp lives on the Staunton Twp. farm where he grew up. He and his wife, Laura, have a daughter, Katherine, who is 5.
