“They can make shields, masks out of everything and I’m giving it free,” Sandy Mendelson said. “They can take as much as they want because it helps the community.”

Officers and fire officials picked clothing material, boxes, face shields and other items they believe they can make PPE with.

Mendelsons is going out of business later this year. Mendelson said he’d rather see the products used to serve Dayton than go to waste.
“Dayton has been great to the Mendelson family and I want to give back,” he said.
Dayton Police Lt. Randy Beane said the generosity is appreciated. Dayton fire and police are both short on PPE products and are reusing items because of the shortage. Beane said the donations will help keep those on the frontlines safe.
“Police and firefighters are out every day doing what they always do,” he said. “(Coronavirus) adds another element of danger to our job. We have to protect the community but we also have to protect ourselves from this virus.”

Beane said the donation will also help keep the first responders’ families safe, as the men and women go back home after serving the community.
