Scams can generate through an email or letter, but Miami County Sheriff Dave Duchak says the biggest problems they see are over-the-phone scams, especially as the weather gets colder.
“A lot of these phone calls originate overseas, they spoof the numbers,” he said. “Typically the holidays, after Thanksgiving to Christmas, we see an increase too on phone scams, solicitations, and things like that,” he said.
There are several different scams circulating, including a call that says an individual needs to pay money to prevent a warrant for their arrest.

“I can’t reiterate it enough, there’s no law enforcement agency or governmental agency that will call and solicit you for money,” Duchak said.
The advice Duchak has is if you don’t know who you’re talking to, hang up the phone.
“It’s frustrating to local law enforcement because again there’s not a lot we can do because they originate overseas.”
