Middletown library name changed today

100-year-old system changed its name due to Butler County growth.

MIDDLETOWN — The growth of Butler County over the decades is in part why the nearly 100-year-old Middletown Library System changed its name today to MidPointe Library System.

Signs went up last week — at a collective cost of almost $7,500 — at the branches in Middletown, Trenton and West Chester Twp.

“As Butler County has grown, there has been a reluctant acceptance that this day would come,” said Anita Carroll, library system director. “All these changes we’re making, it’s in response to what our patrons want and need.”

For an industry where there’s not a lot of excitement, except for recently when the “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” book series were released. This is exciting, Carroll said.

“The library is reorganizing its system, and part of that is changing the name to make it more inclusive of all the library branches,” she said.

The library’s website has also changed to www.midpointelibrary.org.

During the week, the library will feature a number of activities and special programming, which includes a contest where patrons who exchange their old library card for a new one are eligible to win a Kindle Fire. The contest runs through Saturday and a random winner at each branch will be selected.

For details on the special programming visit the new library website or call (513) 424-8042 in Middletown, (513) 777-3131 in West Chester Twp., or (513) 988-9050 in Trenton. Any child who participates in a MidPointe Library System program between today and Saturday will receive a gift from the Library’s lion mascot, Shakespurr.

During the transition of the name change, library system spokeswoman Cari Hillman said many costs will be eliminated. Many documents that had been available at the library will now be available online only.

“This is being done in the most fiscally responsible way possible,” she said of the transition.

Paper stock — such as envelopes and stationery — is being used up to avoid waste, Hillman said.

“We realized they’re not as necessary anymore,” Hillman said. “It’s the direction that libraries are heading.”

The MidPointe Library System has a collection of nearly 500,000 materials and serves a population of almost 200,000 people in Middletown, Trenton and Monroe; and Lemon, Liberty, Madison, Wayne and West Chester townships.
