DeWine names Dennis Deters powerful utility board

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine named former judge Dennis Deters to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, a powerful utility regulation board.

Deters is DeWine’s second appointee to the PUCO. Earlier this year, DeWine named long-time utility lawyer Sam Randazzo as chairman of the PUCO. Randazzo starts his five-year term next month.

In February 2017, then Gov. John Kasich appointed Deters to the First District Court of Appeals to fill a vacancy left by Pat DeWine, the new governor’s son who is now an Ohio Supreme Court justice. But in November 2018, Deters lost his campaign to retain the appeals court seat.

Deters is the brother of Hamilton County prosecutor and former state treasurer Joe Deters. Dennis Deters also served as a Hamilton County commissioner and a township trustee.

The appointment to the PUCO is subject to confirmation by the Ohio Senate. The job, which pays between $73,700 and $190,500 a year, involves regulating utilities, including natural gas, electricity, telephones, railroad crossings and transport trucks. The five commissioners serve rotating five-year terms.
