Montgomery County officials are working to combat chronic school absenteeism.

Juvenile Court Judges Anthony Capizzi and Helen Wallace, and Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. met with school district Truancy Officers to discuss and plan an upcoming absenteeism initiative.

Chronic absenteeism is a problem that negatively affects the community, and statistics have shown that students who miss two to four days of school in September are likely to have chronic absenteeism throughout the year.

Judge Helen Wallace will preside over the new program called the T.E.A.M. Initiative (Together Everyone Achieves More) to work with the community to ensure all children receive an education.

The goal of this program is to reduce the chronic absenteeism rate by giving support and assistance to parents and their children.

The full program details will be announced at a kick‐off at a later date, where all Montgomery County school superintendents will be invited to attend and are encouraged to participate.
